look deets :: by stylist + designer, amy devan

this was one of the most fun shoots to style so far! as a fashion junkie, i have been literally dying to work on a shoot inspired by this fabulous collection.  for this shoot, i wanted to take elements from the show i really loved (i.e. monochromatic palette, clean lines, and layered Indian-esque jewelry) and make it work in a relatable and wearable way.

more on our looks::

for Payal’s work-day look, we chose an effortless slip dress she already had in her wardrobe (and you probably have something similar in your closet). the simplistic appeal and shift dress fit were perfect for layering and changing the look around from day to night.  we first paired her dress with a dusty-terracotta blazer from Uniqlo, some gladiator sandals, and of course her big black, leather work bag.  we added a single silver necklace for a touch of glam.  for her after-work look, Payal was sure to pack extra necklaces and statement earrings in her work bag — so the transition from day to night was easy and took no more than a few minutes.  she took off the blazer to show just enough skin with the spaghetti straps of her shift dress, layered on those extra jewels, and was ready for happy hour.

Amy’s day-time look was a fashion risk, but definitely wearable in the boardroom. when styling your look, always choose a focus — a statement.  for Amy’s look, it was this long, silky duster dress from Urban Outfitters which she buttoned all the way to the top to give it a preppy Gossip Girl appeal.  she wore simple black leggings underneath since the side slits are much too high for work, belted it with a black and metal detail belt from Aldo, gladiator heels appropriate for work, and a well tailored black pinstripe blazer from United Colors Of Benetton that really elevated the entire look.  for jewelry, we opted for silver and black only and kept it simple, tucking the necklace under the buttoned up collar of the dress so it appeared as an extension of the neckline. for evening, Amy ditched the blazer, grabbed a hipster Goan shoulder sling bag in black/silver, and layered on the jewels, including a haath phool (hand jewelry).  PS: we know you have plenty of jewels and a boho bag in that closet of yours…find them and try styling this look for yourself.  share a photo and tag #amyxpayal so we can give you some Insta-fashion praise too!

by the way, don’t you love how jewelry trends these days are so heavily inspired by our South Asian culture? ours are a mix of vintage jewels we already had and some extras (like the haath phool) from H&M.  everyone at Coachella seemed to rock statement silver and gold necklaces with curvatures and shape so reminiscent of South Asia….the kind of jewelry we’ve grown up wearing to weddings and family events is on trend now and we are beyond excited!  if you’re South Asian like us, you probably have oodles of jewels like this…try pairing it with your next work-day look, and don’t forget to pack extra necklaces in your bag for a chic after-work look.

beauty lowdown :: by mua + beauty expert, payal patel

work to evening should be nothing more than a simply transition; maybe a change of a lip color, some darker eyeshadows, or a touch of blush.  for Amy and Payal’s looks, we really focused on keeping daytime makeup workable for an evening outing in two different ways.

Amy’s eye makeup shows off a light smokey-ness effect, which is typically more makeup than usual for a work setting, but still appropriate. you can recreate this look by simply adding a black liner to the water line (love the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in “Mood” ).  to take it one step further, take a grey or light brown shade and blend it under the bottom lashes as well as above your top lashes (like a blended eyeliner effect) to give it a more smokey look; the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette is perfect to achieve this step. finish off your eyes with the L’Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara (#1 drug store mascara), and there you have a smokey eye look that is still appropriate for a work to evening transition.

for Payals makeup, we played it safe!  we simply added to her natural features such as her brows and eyelashes.  wanna know a secret?  applying eyeshadow is not always necessary, especially when you are going for the “no-makeup” makeup look.  sometimes it’s best to leave out the eyeshadow and stick to a liner that will make your eyes pop.  for Payal’s look, we added volume and length to her lashes by using her favorite of course, the Stila Cosmetics Huge Extreme Lash Mascara.  for the brows, we used the NYX Micro Brow Pencil in “Chocolate” to outline the shape of her brows, and finished it off by applying the L’Oreal Brow Stylist Plumper in “Medium to Dark” (especially loving this product because it gives a bold brow without making it look too drawn on…definitely a must have!).  finish it off with a nude lip color ; Maybelline COLOR SENSATIONAL® VIVID MATTE LIQUID™ in “Nude Thrill” (loving this shade, especially since it has a peachy undertone).

there you have it; two makeup looks for two common looks: work to evening!
